2019 marks 400 years since the first Africans were brought to a colony in Virginia, triggering the system of chattel slavery in America.

Though slavery formally ended in 1865, its legacy effects remain. U-M professor Earl Lewis, who directs the Center for Social Solutions, notes that segregation replaced slavery and mass incarceration replaced segregation.

In this episode of Michigan Minds, Lewis talks about the center’s Slavery Initiative and why it’s important to spark constructive conversations about the history of slavery and its aftermath.

“This is our shared history. And our future says to us that we need to figure out a way to understand that shared history,” he says.
