Preeti N. Malani, MD, infectious disease expert and chief health officer for the University of Michigan, was recently featured on the Public Health On Call podcast to discuss COVID-19 safety on college campuses this fall.
Malani explains U-M’s innovative plans for a hybrid fall semester and the public health strategies in place to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission on campus. She discusses the changes to physical spaces in campus buildings, the addition of 13 outdoor canopies for student use, and the many efforts being made to promote safety during the times students are not in classes.
Malani also emphasizes the importance of not letting COVID-19 preparations and monitoring eclipse other health issues—especially within the student community—such as depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
Public Health On Call is a podcast series produced by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. It is hosted by Josh Sharfstein, vice dean for public health practice and community engagement.
